A Secure and Prosperous foreign policy

The Daily Show's John Stewart takes on American foreign policy, and helps to break down the rhetoric of Security and Prosperity: oppression and exploitation.

Agent Provocateur

Ottawa Indymedia offers some coverage of the Montebello SPP protest. The mainstream media has barely covered this, and is not likely to budge on the real stories such as this one. Bless the internet in all it's glory.

Police provocateurs at Leaders Summit?

Stuart Trew, 21.08.2007 09:03

On August 20, in the Green Zone protest outside the Leaders Summit in Montebello, Quebec, the president of the Canadian Energy and Paperworkers union, Dave Coles, confronted what could be rock-throwing police agents posing as legitimate protesters.

On August 20, in the Green Zone protest outside the Leaders Summit in Montebello, Quebec, the president of the Canadian Energy and Paperworkers union, Dave Coles, confronted what could be rock-throwing police agents posing as legitimate protesters. As seen in the video by filmmaker Paul Manley (linked below), Coles ends up diffusing a potential incident. But at the end of the scuffle, the riot police just let the two masked men through the line, and the arrest appears to be staged. Other anarchist protesters in the crowd are convinced that at least one of the men is a police officer, a provocateur working for one of the security forces who was instructed to shake things up to justify the police response.

TVO The Agenda - Radical Education

This is an incredible episode of The Agenda. It addresses the debate over our education system, posing the question "if we could rebuild our education from scratch, what would it look like?". I suppose it may not go without saying, that radical education has become a major part of my life. This show touched on very specific issues that I am very interested in. My favourite quote "trying to make children fodder for industry".

Saturns really cool hexagon

NASA's Jet Propulsion Labratory, has explored an 18 year old mystery hexagonal formation cirling the north pole of Saturn. I know they say that hexagons are one of natures most efficient and common shapes, but I don't think this is what they had in mind!

NASA's Voyager 1 and 2 spacecraft imaged the feature over two decades ago. The fact that it has appeared in Cassini images indicates that it is a long-lived feature. A second hexagon, significantly darker than the brighter historical feature, is also visible in the Cassini pictures. The spacecraft's visual and infrared mapping spectrometer is the first instrument to capture the entire hexagon feature in one image.

"This is a very strange feature, lying in a precise geometric fashion with six nearly equally straight sides," said Kevin Baines, atmospheric expert and member of Cassini's visual and infrared mapping spectrometer team at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif. "We've never seen anything like this on any other planet. Indeed, Saturn's thick atmosphere where circularly-shaped waves and convective cells dominate is perhaps the last place you'd expect to see such a six-sided geometric figure, yet there it is."

The hexagon is similar to Earth's polar vortex, which has winds blowing in a circular pattern around the polar region. On Saturn, the vortex has a hexagonal rather than circular shape. The hexagon is nearly 25,000 kilometers (15,000 miles) across. Nearly four Earths could fit inside it.
What interests me is the fact that this is apparantly stable! That is to say that we aren't dealing with a "Jesus face on toast" thing. Enjoy the movie!

Video of Jack Layton’s speech: Health care & Canada’s prosperity gap

This was the speech which I mentioned before. I stumbled upon it as a CPAC video. Jack presents himself calmer than I read him as being in the speech. Nevertheless, he is quite articulate on the issues facing healthcare today.

Anyways, this is a large file, and I hope you all make good use of it!

Blogging Tories' Stephen Taylor interviews Jack

This was something I saw put up a few days ago. Jack I think was quite well composed and thoughtful. I know for a fact that the desire for a more efficient society is something that appeals to the right as much as it does the left. We tend to differ on what exactly the government should do-- right-wingers would often expect the private sector to work towards that ideal on independant, voluntary terms. However I have found that many right-wingers are often interested to hear of ways in which the government can do things. I think we may well overestimate how much of that "small government" stagnation is believed by the people who vote Conservative. On the whole a great interview.

A Message From Jack Layton To Students Of Feb. 7th "All Out" Day Of Action

This video is likely targeted towards the Dec. 7th "All Out" student day of action. I'm hosting it and hopefully this will get around to various campuses before Wednesday!

Jack Layton Sings The Mike Duffy Blues

Here is one I found while combing YouTube. I suspect we will see more videos that are far more issues based, but for now let's have some fun! Jack busts out the guitar to wish Political commentator and TV personality a healthy return.

Jack Layton speaks at Edmonton-Strathcona nomination meeting

This is a speech posted on YouTube, which was so good-- I thought I would unGoogle it for you all. It's a big one! Almost as big as Hugo Chavez's UN speech. I encoded into Quicktime, which I believe is far more useful than .flv, and you can now play it in iTunes, or put it on your iPod! Enjoy!
